Al Diaz is a native New York artist best known for his friendship and collaboration on the SAMO©…
graffiti (that appeared in lower Manhattan from 1978-1980) with Jean Michel Basquiat. A prolific and influential first generation graffiti artist who would later become a text based street artist, Diaz’s career spans 5 decades.
Al appears in numerous publications and films and has served as a guest speaker on the subjects of Graffiti Culture, The New York Art Scene of the 1970’s & 80’s and the teenage years of Jean Michel
Basquiat.
Some of his most recent appearances include; The Brooklyn Museum, The Smithsonian Museum of
African American History & The Barbican Arts Center (London) The BBC’s (David Schulman) award winning documentary on Jean Michel Basquiat “Rage To Riches” and Sara Driver’s award winning documentary on the teenage years of Jean Michel Basquiat, “BOOM for REAL “
Diaz along with Mariah Fox Hausman has recently published a book on the history of the SAMO©…graffiti; “SAMO©.. SINCE 1978...” (Irie Books)
